A large area in front of the National Monument on Calton Hill, left barren and compacted for the past decade, has been re-grassed. Ten volunteers and four park rangers laid 240 square metres on 12 November 2025. As in May 2025, hard-wearing RTF (rhizomatous tall fescue) turf was used.
The turf was purchased by the Calton Hill Conservation Trust, Café Calton and the Collective Gallery. Rotavation and topsoil was provided by the City of Edinburgh Council.
This community action was in response to the erosion emergency called by the Trust on 12 September 2025. While the 240 square metres covers a significant part of the largest of the bare, denuded patches of earth on the hill, many other areas have lost their grass and soil. We will be hoping to reseed and returf many of these areas in 2026.
Many thanks to all concerned for their hard work. The photo shows the completed job from the top of the Nelson Monument on 12 November.
