Much of our volunteering work has gone towards restoring the long-buried rainwater runoff channels (called “whinstone double sett channels” in the 2017 Calton Hill Management Plan) that we believe date back to the early 19th century.
In recent years, rainwater has cascaded down our paths and steps at times of heavy rainfall, bringing down earth and gravel with it. We hope that restoring the channels will be a first step towards restoring and resurfacing the paths to make them safer and more accessible.
The map shows our work so far.
