STV News: Action needed to fight erosion on Calton Hill amid fears over ‘managed decline’, 4 October 2025

By Admin on 6 October 202529 October 2025

Following the City of Edinburgh Council Culture and Communities Committee on 2 October 2025, the story of the Calton Hill Conservation Trust’s Erosion Emergence was taken up by the STV News with an article by Joe Sullivan on 4 October. STV News reported:

“At Thursday’s Culture and Communities Committee, councillors agreed on a motion that will see officers explore how the city can help.”

“SNP councillor Finlay McFarlane said: “The footfall on Calton Hill is unreal compared to most of the other premier parks. I would say there is nowhere quite facing that level of significant pressure. We do need to have an extra special look at how we’re maintaining it, and not just accepting erosion as a fact. We need some heavy machinery from parks to undo the decades of people stamping it into a dustbowl.” “
