CM Gates & Barriers of West Calder were working on the access barrier today! They told us that the opening and closing mechanism of the left-hand side of the gate (looking inwards) has been repaired and it was functional. They were still working on the intercom.
In order to operate the barrier — in either direction — drivers must get out of their vehicles and enter a digital code on a keypad, or alternatively speak through an intercom, to either a council security officer, or someone at the Collective (City Observatory) or the Nelson Monument Museum.
We were told that both gates of the access barrier would be closed during the FCZ period. (This will need to be confirmed as it would mean no foot (or wheel) access.) After the FCZ period, the right-hand gate is supposed to be left open for 24-hour foot entry.
Obviously this is a low-tech solution relying on manned supervision. It is expensive as well as lacking the convenience of a modern, automatic barrier.
We hope it will be replaced later by a modern, less-wasteful system — together with a purpose-designed entry for pedestrians, cyclists and wheel chair users. Will we have to wait another seven years?
