Some people removed heras fencing from the returfing area nearby and used it to climb up onto the monument and off it. This was on May 24.
The cross bars were not strong enough to bear weight but they continued to use them.
The Calton Hill Conservation Trust have asked the council whether climbing on the monument — which is a war memorial — is allowed or not, and who would be liable if there is a serious accident.
Our view has always been that if it is allowed, a safe means of climbing up there should be provided, or if it isn’t, at least there should be notices explaining the risks.
