The Trust have commented on the planning application (26/00217/ADV) by the Collective Gallery for seven new signs on and around the hill.
We compliment the Collective on the attractiveness of their design (and also compliance with council safety rules), however we have asked for the addition of the words ‘Calton Hill’ on the signs:
“… to make it clear that the Collective is within the Calton Hill public park and not a separate, different place. Many tourists mistakenly turn left from Regent Road into Calton Hill (road) instead of ascending the stone steps to the park, because they see the park is signed as the Collective Gallery. The simple addition of the words Calton Hill would obviate this problem.”
One of our members also commented:
“ . . . the application makes no reference to this being a listed building within a conservation area and UNESCO World Heritage Site. The designs used should be appropriate for the heritage of the area. Does the Council have a standard for advertising signage in the World Heritage Site? Have Historic Environment Scotland and Edinburgh World Heritage been contacted for comments?”
See the City of Edinburgh Planning Portal for details of the application here.
