As of 10 January, the council have decided to indefinitely lock one gate of the Calton Hill access barrier. This means that unauthorised motor vehicles will not be able to enter, while one gate remains open for pedestrians, cyclists and wheelchair users.
The Calton Hill Conservation Trust have been asking for closure to general vehicles for a long time. We made a statement about this on 10 July 2024, see here.
While there is still no automatic entry system for service vehicles that need to go up on the hill, we are pleased that traffic will be much reduced and the hill will be safer for visitors. We hope there will be less litter, also fewer cars and vans driving over and damaging the grass.
