Many thanks to Stephen Welch (Lothian Recorder of the Scottish Ornithological Society (SOC) and co-author of the local bird bible, ‘Birds in South-east Scotland 2007-13’) and our volunteers for yesterday’s (10 Sept 2023) BIRD WALK survey identifying 22 bird species including peregrine falcon and Europe’s smallest bird, the goldcrest.
The list included: blue tit, carrion crow, chaffinch, chiffchaff, coal tit, dunnock, feral pigeon, goldcrest, great tit, herring gull, lesser black-backed gull, long-tailed tit, magpie, meadow pipit, mistle thrush, nuthatch, peregrine falcon, robin, siskin, stock dove, wood pigeon, wren.
Most birds were identified by their distinctive song rather than distant appearance. Some volunteers used the Princeton Merlin bird ID app.
The full species list has been published on our Documents Page.
